 Abstract:  The League of Women Voters was formed in 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio, by former suffragists and members of the Woman's Suffrage Party. The League is nonpartisan and has endorsed various legislation, including laws to protect female workers and improve child welfare and education. Its efforts include voter registration drives, assistance to election boards, demonstrations of registration and voting techniques, as well as sponsoring candidates debates. The collection consists of photographs of members and activities engaged in or sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Cleveland. Included in the photographs is a group portrait in front of the Woman Suffrage Headquarters, ca. 1912, that includes Belle Sherwin and Florence Allen. Other photographs are of the October 3, 1914, Ohio Women's Suffrage Parade in Cleveland, Ohio. Pictured are Mrs. George F. Forest, the Men's League for Equal Suffrage, the Progressive Party float, and the Ohio County Committees for Women's Suffrage. Photographs of League displays and buildings include views of the National League of Women Voters building, a straw vote display, and various voter registration displays. Group portraits, taken at League activities, include Carl Stokes, Mary Jayne Willis, Anthony Celebrezze, Robert Montgomery, Mrs. John C. Lee, Mrs. Charles Bing, Mrs. Malcolm McBride, Mrs. Maz Hellman, Mrs. Howard Law, Mrs. Melvin Ott, Mrs. Durrell Haag, Mrs. William Merriman, Mrs. Norman Davies, Mrs. Duane Willis, Miss Grace Treat, and Judge Mary B. Grossman.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Picture File I is a collection of black and white and color photographs that depict scenes in Cleveland, Ohio, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The photographs include views of amusement parks, banquets, bridges, buildings, businesses, celebrations, cemeteries, churches and synagogues, clubs, colleges and universities, conventions, convents and seminaries, court proceedings, disasters, fairs and exhibitions, fire departments, the Flats, hospitals, hotels and inns, housing developments, immigrants and naturalization, industry, labor unions, lakefront and the harbor, libraries, life cycle events, lighthouses, markethouses and malls, the military and military units, monuments, museums, music and musicians, parades, parks, the police department, political campaigns and elections, Public Square, radio and television, recreation, residences, riots/demonstrations/strikes, rivers/streams/brooks, schools (both public and private), social service agencies/charities, sports, streets, taverns, theaters, toll houses, transportation, general views, and zoos and aquariums. This collection has been completely digitized and is available for viewing at the Digital Cleveland History Center.

 Abstract:  Anthony J. Celebrezze (1910-1998) was an Ohio state senator (1950-1953), mayor of Cleveland (1953-1962), Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (1962-1965), and federal judge for the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals (1965-1980). The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Anthony J. Celebrezze, his family and friends, and governmental officials; candid and formal pictures of official functions in Cleveland and Washington, D.C.; and views of Cleveland and other areas of the United States. Included are portraits of John F Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Robert F. Kennedy, Thomas P. O'Neill, John W. McCormack, Michael P. Feighan, and Charles A. Vanik.

 Abstract:  Josephine Saxer Irwin (1890-1984) was a Cleveland, Ohio, area educator and political activist. Her major interests included women's rights and world peace. She served as a city councilman in Fairview Park, Ohio, from 1958-1962. She was a founding member of Womenspace. Each year, the National Organization for Women and Womenspace confers the Josephine Irwin Award to women contributing to women's rights. The collection consists of photographs depicting Irwin and others at various events, including the Fairview Park Senior Citizens Club Christmas party (1964), the Rocky River Research Club Colonial party (1932), and the Tokyo Women's Club Tea (1966). Includes individual and group portraits.

 Abstract:  The Consumers League of Ohio is a political action organization concerned with the welfare of the laboring class. It lobbies for legislation in their interests. It was founded in 1900 in Cleveland, Ohio, as a women's group to insure female laborers decent wages, hours and working conditions. Men were admitted in 1921. the collection consists of photographs relating to personnel and investigative activities of the Consumers League of Ohio. Included are photographs of child workers, displays, the Governor's Committee on Migrant Labor, and portraits.

 Abstract:  Albina Cermak (1904-1978) was active in Republican Party politics in Cleveland, Ohio. She was vice-chairman and secretary of the Cuyahoga County Republican Central and Executive Committees, chairman of the Republican Women's Organization of Cuyahoga County, member of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, a Cleveland, Ohio, precinct committeewoman, and a member of the Ohio Federation of Republican Women's Clubs. She was a United States Customs Collector before running unsuccessfully for Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio state senator and Clerk of the Cleveland Municipal Court. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Albina Cermak in her various posts, including United States Collector of Customs, with officials and employees. There are also Cermak family portraits, and individual portraits of noted politicians, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard M. Nixon, and Frances Payne Bolton, inscribed to Albina Cermak.

 Abstract:  John Cumming Johnson moved to Memphis, Tennessee, from Franklin, Ohio, in 1854. In 1856 he married Mary Anne Elizabeth Fisher. They were active in many philanthropic enterprises, especially education. Johnson and his son, William Cumming Johnson, were involved in the cotton trade. William Cumming Johnson was a major stockholder in the Tennessee Fiber Co. and had extensive real estate dealings in Florida. In 1877 he married Sarah Evangeline Harvey. She was the daughter of Charles T. Harvey, a New England structural engineer, and Sarah Van Eps Harvey. "Eva" Harvey married William Cumming Johnson in 1897 and settled in Tennessee, where she was a homemaker and mother. The Johnsons had four sons, Harvey B., Richard Selden, William C. Jr. and Burton Hayley. Lilian Wycoff Johnson, the sister of William Cumming Johnson, was one of the South's pioneer women educators. She served as president of the Western College for Women at Oxford, Ohio, founded the West Tennessee Normal School (now Memphis State College), and established a center for social and cooperative work on the Cumberland Plateau at Summerfield, Tennessee which was called KinCo. It later became the Highlander Folk School. The collection consists of portraits and views of the Johnson family of Memphis, Tennessee, including William Cumming Johnson, his wife Sarah Evangeline Harvey Johnson, his sister Lilian Wycoff Johnson, their family, friends, residences, and travels. Also included in this collection are views of KinCo Farm and Highlander School near Monteagle, Tennessee, founded by Lilian Wycoff Johnson.
